Review: Simplicity in Preaching

Author
Category Book Reviews
Date October 22, 2010

This is a little gem. It is only 21 pages long but contains more wise advice about preaching than books many times the length. J C Ryle, the well known Victorian Church of England minister writes about a subject close to his heart: Simplicity in preaching. In all his own writings (as well as his sermons) Bishop Ryle practiced what he preached. This booklet is no exception. It is clear, direct and memorable.

He begins by emphasising that preaching in a simple way is essential but difficult. It takes time, effort and a great deal of thought. He then goes on to give hints as to the best way to preach simply. These include: Make sure you understand your text, use simple words, short sentences, direct speech and plenty of illustrations.

Any preacher or teacher will find this booklet stimulating and challenging. It can be read in 30 minutes but I suggest its contents will not be forgotten. Highly recommended.
